This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about the millions of thoughts that go through your mind every day and the endless ways you effortlessly communicate those thoughts with friends, family, community workers, and strangers through various mediums, such as speaking face to face, phone calls, Facebook, text, email, and letters.

Now imagine having no way to express yourself in a medium where others would actually understand you.

Our students live in this type of reality. They have various medical and academic diagnoses including autism, intellectual disability, and Down syndrome, just to name a few. These disabilities impair their ability to communicate effectively with others and limits their opportunities to build deep, meaningful relationships where both parties are understood.

My Project

One thing that could enhance our SDC communication program at our elementary school is the use of TECHNOLOGY! We are already able to teach communication through low-technology paper-based means, however, having iPads and voice output devices can provide more enriching opportunities for our students who respond well to technology.

I would like to enrich our speech and language classroom and SDC classroom language stations with MORE high-tech communication systems (such as iPads and durable cases) so we can reach MORE students with speech-generating devices which will help our students soar to their highest potential in their communication abilities.

More exposure to vocabulary in different modalities is our goal for optimally feeding the minds of communication-hungry students. From this technology support, we envision great gains in the abilities of students with special needs to understand and interact with the world around them.
