Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The novel, Interior Chinatown, will provide a jumping off point for my students to practice their burgeoning literary analysis skills through the unusual (and challenging) structure that layers scripts with a meta-narrative.
The value of this story is not just as a practice tool for literary analysis; this story will provide my students an opportunity to think about how Asian American experiences are portrayed and the impact of stereotypes on both perceptions of what it means to be Asian American but also on identity formation.
Students will engage with the scripts that they are experiencing around the expectations placed on them by society, family, and themselves.
Through structured discussion, reflective writing, and creative projects, students will explore how Charles Yu's innovative format—a screenplay within a novel—mirrors the compartmentalized roles many people feel forced to play in their daily lives. As seniors preparing to transition beyond high school, this text offers a timely opportunity to examine how cultural narratives shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
This project will culminate in students creating their own "counter-scripts"—narratives that challenge limiting stereotypes they've encountered in their own lives. These personal responses will not only deepen their connection to the text but also foster empathy and understanding across diverse experiences within our learning community.
