This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are 9th graders that are vivacious and full of ideas ripe for discussion that need to transition to written expression. Many of my students are special needs students, as four out of my six periods are either co-taught or intensive classes. Some of these students work well with technology for writing, while others are stronger with pen to paper.
One of my goals for these students is to help them become stronger in written and oral expression in an environment that is tranquil, yet alive with collaborative discussion.
I have gone to great lengths to provide an environment rich with choice. I also want students to have resources at their fingertips that are needed to be successful in the classroom.
The requested materials will be used to annotate texts, and provide a place for students to keep all of their work and graphic organizers used to facilitate their writing. I want students to create portfolios to show the growth in their writing throughout the school year. Students often ask to turn off the lights when working because the florescent light is too harsh, so I also want to soften the lights with bulb covers.
My goal is to create an environment rich with student writing.
We are beginning novel studies which will require students to keep track of their writing as they respond to the text and prepare for group discussions.
With the requested materials, students will have all of the necessary tools to keep a writing portfolio. We are beginning a novel study that will have multiple handouts and the binders will be where we collect all of our information for repeated reference.
The light filters are to soften the lighting in the classroom, as most of the students request for the lights to be off due to the florescent lighting being too harsh.
