Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Scrapbooks are used for many special occasions, but rarely made for lack of time and money. Our students will create a piece of their own family history through making a family scrapbook based on family interviews, through telephone, in person or through social media. They will interview family members and gather their answers looking for family themes and ideas about what makes them unique or the special traditions they have as a family unit. In other words, after hearing stories, students will use selections to tell their family history by selecting themes or traditions they've discovered.

Oral history is a method of gathering and preserving historical information through interviews.

Family stories provide valuable perspectives and understanding of the past and the present, as well as strengthen family ties across the ages. For families, it is a wonderful way for young people to interview older relatives about their personal stories, family history, and cultural traditions. Through oral history interviews and conversations, older relatives give children a better understanding of who they and their family are and the forces that shaped the family's identity.

Allowing students to discover the valuable family memories is of utmost importance to me as a historian. Students discovering more about themselves and their families is an amazing self-empowering tool. Sometimes they may not have all the tools to create the masterpieces they've discovered. The monetary value isn’t important, it’s self-discovery that is of utmost important. But sometimes it’s nice to give my low income students as much resources as possible. For this reason, I am asking for the supplies to help them create long lasting pieces that can become part of their family's history and something special teenage students can keep for many years. My Students are always thankful for this project.
