Help me give my students hands on activities. We will be creating scrapbooks of storms and other projects that will use the colored pencils, glue and colored paper. Ping pong balls will help students act out photosynthesis.
I teach sixth grade science in a rural school with a poverty rate of 60%. My students have very limited experiences outside of the community. Approximately 10% of my students are English language learners and 16% receive special services for learning disabilities. These students struggle with science due high lexile level of many science textbooks and the content specific vocabulary.
As a science teacher, I must come up with interesting and creative ways to engage my students in science.
I hope to inspire many of my students to apply and attend our state universities, Clemson and South Carolina. Go Tigers!
My Project
Many of my students struggle with science. Middle school is a tough transition and this is the first true science class. Not only is the content difficult, nonfiction reading is difficult because of the content specific vocabulary.
Scrapbooking in science is a great way to create models and use creative writing to describe difficult science concepts.
Students will be able to create scrapbook pages using the decorative scissors and the colorful paper of surviving a storm, using the ping pong balls to actually "do" photosynthesis and cellular respiration. They can create a scrapbook page of their journey during these processes.
