I am the sponsor of our fledgling Scrabble Team at my middle school. I want to get as many students interested in joining as possible. We have a few Scrabble games but need more. What I really need are Scrabble timers. Timers will help create the true competition atmosphere my students will need in order to compete with other schools. I want to form a team that can go to other middle schools and challenge them. I eventually want to form a county Scrabble league, have uniforms, and have competitions with trophies for the winners. Nobody in the state, I believe, does this and I want to be the first! Students learn new words which helps them on our state end-of-grade tests. They practice math skills when adding points and they develop social skills when interacting with their partner. It's a win-win situation for all involved. I teach language arts and I use Scrabble in my room as a reward but also to enforce the above-mentioned skills. My students, the school, and eventually the county will benefit from a Scrabble club because of students' mastery of new words, reinforcement of math skills, and development of people skills.
