My seventh grade English Language Arts students have diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs. I teach general education English Language Arts and also a co-taught course designed to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities.
All of my students love to learn; they are enthusiastic about school and want to do their very best in ELA.
They love finding new ways to learn and engage with curriculum and I want to provide as many new opportunities and outlets as possible.
My Project
Is Scrabble a game? Yes. Is Scrabble only a game? No! If you search for "Scrabble and reading development" in Google you will find that study after study has proven that word games improve Lexile level (overall reading comprehension) as well as writing ability by increasing working vocabulary memory. By donating to this project you will provide the opportunity for your children to "gamify" their education in English Language Arts.
This is an outstanding opportunity for students to learn while competing and having fun.
The great thing about Scrabble is that players learn from one another. Their peers' every move is a learning opportunity when accompanied by my instruction and guiding rules. The dictionaries included in this project will also be used by students during independent silent reading time. The use of a traditional dictionary is a lost art in the digital world, and it is a tool that has been proven to improve working vocabulary through exposure.
