This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is home to a wildly diverse student body in terms of socioeconomics, race, and life experience. We have students who are living in million dollar homes and students whose single parents are working three jobs just to make ends meet. We have substantial populations of caucasian, African American, hispanic, and Burmese students. The diversity is phenomenal, but it can often lead to a disjointed, disconnected student population.
How do we unite these students and build community?
The simple answer is to show them that they are more similar than they are different. We want to show them that although we each bring our own unique experiences and perspectives to the table, we are all NW. And our school is great because of the dynamic student population. We want to celebrate our differences while banding together as a strong, supportive, unified school family.
My Project
I have recently started coaching girls soccer for my school. The team was without a coach up until just 2 days before tryouts. Though I am unexperienced at coaching and not exactly an expert on soccer, I knew what a phenomenal group of girls were interested in being on the team this year. So to make sure that they were able to play this season, I volunteered to coach. It has been a major learning curve for me. But the unbelievably amazing girls on my team have been so supportive and have assisted so much in helping me learn the ropes.
I want to repay their kindness and generosity of spirit by helping them get the equipment they deserve.
In terms of equipment, all we were provided at the start of the season was a bag of soccer balls. During practices, we have to share our soccer field with the boys team. It is difficult to scrimmage on just half of what is already a less than ideal playing space. I don't want our lack of equipment to affect how the girls perceive themselves as athletes or cause their confidence to waiver. That is why I am trying to build a store of solid equipment for the team.
