This is my first year teaching first grade and every day my students remind me how much they all love learning. We focus on a growth mindset in our classroom, and with this mindset comes a large appetite for learning as much as possible and in several different ways.
My students are fun, inquisitive, adventurous, active and hard working.
I try to incorporate different learning strategies every day to ensure I reach every one of my students. They challenge me to continually become a better teacher, and in turn I am able to challenge them to always push themselves to improve every day.
My Project
I use the Daily 5 program in my classroom. We have centers such as listen to reading, writing, and retelling. In our listen to reading center students listen to books on CD. This is used to teach students what good reading sounds like. The students LOVE this center, but I have a very limited supply of books on CD, this is where I need headphones and the Dr. Seuss books on CD. Retelling is an important part of comprehension. My students show a greater understanding of summarizing when they can retell the story with pictures. The magnetic storytelling kits I have requested are a fabulous way to work on this important reading skill. Our writing center provides my students many opportunities to create sentences and stories in multiple ways which is engaging and creative. Students love writing more when they have other options besides pencil and paper. We are excited to use magnetic sentence strips and mini magnetic white boards to allow the creativity to flow.
