This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For six years the library at our school was shuttered due to severe budget cuts. Now, two years after its re-opening, students are rushing in on their breaks, eager to get books. Hurrying to see if a new book was returned, because there just aren't enough of those to go around.
My students attend a Title 1, inner-city Los Angeles middle school with 720 students, 99% of whom are minorities.
Ninety-one percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunches. Nearly a quarter of the students are learning English.
Reading scores are low at our school, but we are on a mission to change that, by getting every kid a chance to find that "one good book" that will hook him/her on reading.
My Project
These materials will be placed in the library collection and available to all students in the school. To improve readers students must have access to high-interest independent reading materials that they can self-select. Soccer is definitely one of those topics of high interest at our school.
These soccer books will help reluctant readers and English Learners improve their reading ability by stocking the library with updated titles in a high-interest subject area that students will be excited to checkout.
Providing students with access to high-quality library books has so many benefits to students. It piques their interest and curiosity in new topics. It encourages them to read more independently. All this will transfer to their schoolwork, where improved reading ability will always result in academic improvement.
