I am a teacher at the unfortunately named New School For Arts & Sciences, where our arts program is restricted to a mandatory art class with pastels and paints. Our students are extremely poor and their experiences are limited. But. Early in the school year, I had a DonorsChoose request fulfilled and got 50 copies of Walter Dean Myers' Monster, a book written half as a narrative and half as a screenplay. Along with the normal curriculum, the students completed a screen writing unit. It has taken off - we read excerpts of scripts and watch the films and then try to write short pieces in similar styles. We are getting to the point where we need to start shooting this stuff and complete this process! These kids are full of such intense stories, such drama, and their outlets are so limited. They are products of this ghetto they are emerging from, and are bursting with tales to tell. Please help give me the chance to open their eyes to a new medium, another way to communicate their world. I know it is quite a purchase, but you will change some lives forever. As far as specifics are concerned, students in my class have all completed short, ten page screenplays. There is also a film class, in which students have spent last semester breaking down scenes shot by shot. For a first unit with this camera, students would be broken into groups of four. Having each completed a brief, ten page script, the groups would break down all the screenplays by shot and then storyboard each script. We would then embark on an eight-week process, two weeks to shoot each script. Students would rotate positions from one project to the next, each having the chance to be the director, cinematographer, producer and grip. Hopefully, with this camera, this class will serve as a model for film classes in the year to come. We are the New School for Arts & Sciences, and I hope to put our money where our name is.
