My Students

My students are 21st century learners educated in a not so 21st century classroom. They are creative, tech-savvy teens who desire the use of high tech gadgets to fuel their learning. They love hands-on, engaging activities and labs that both challenge their minds and allow for real-life applications. Although our school district is small, we are mighty. We make due with very little. Our students deserve the same opportunities as many of the larger and more affluent districts. For many of our students, school is their safe haven.

My Project

For years now, my students have been learning about cell division on paper. I would provide them printed out images of fish and onion cells in different phases of mitosis, and they would identify the mitotic phase. Although this method is helpful as an introduction, it's time for them to experience mitosis through the lens of a microscope. Allowing them to experience mitosis under a microscope will expose them to a world they have yet to explore, while also preparing them for high school biology. Seeing mitosis occurring right before their eyes, will be the icing on the cake to an already exciting study of genetics.
