Cells are smallest and most basic unit of life. Problem is, we can't see them! Help these 7th Graders visualize cells with a digital microscope and slide set.
My students attend a public charter school serving 700 students in grades 5-12 who live in and around rural northeastern North Carolina.
The middle school started in 2001, and its high school began in 2005. Our student body is 85% African-American with 65% being eligible for free/reduced lunch. In 2002-03 the school was named the sixth highest performing school in the entire state of NC out of 2,219 schools. By 2005, 97% of our students were performing at or above grade level according to NC state tests and from 2009-11, 100% of seniors were accepted to college-85% of these students will be first generation college graduates. At this school, we are guided by the philosophy that "we learn not for school, but for life." We believe education is the most powerful weapon we have to fight for social justice and that our students will make change the world.
My Project
By allowing students to have access to a digital microscope, these 7th graders will be able to visualize cells for the first time in their scientific career. It is my hope that by exposing students to this technology, they will be inspired to learn more about the human body as well as cells. Future scientists in the making! The requested slide set includes many of the organisms and ideas that students will need to explore this year such as amoebas, mitosis, and plant cells. Students will compare the slides to see how unique life can be from the smallest details.
7th Grade Science is our students first exposure to cells and Biology.
Trying to teach students about cells without being able to show them seems unfair. They want the proof! Thank you in advance for helping my students gain the technology necessary to advance their scientific observation skills.
