My Students

A typical day in science are children whispering as the time approaches. Students are wondering, "What are we doing today?" As they watch materials being placed out and read the days objective on the board, they can't wait to see what's new today.

These 3rd graders are highly motivated by technology, like many of today's youth.

Unfortunately, they may not have access to much technology at home. Since they are 8 years old, they are definitely students who have to be engaged to hold their attention. My objective is to teach the students scientific process and problem solving skills through hands-on investigations. Students love getting involved in investigations and figuring out how things work. Having materials readily available to carry out these investigations would only make the process smoother. These students are in a Title I school, which has a high number of families that have a low family income. These materials are not typical school supplies requested of the parents, but are classroom supplies that would be used to further the students learning experience.

My Project

Imaging learning about volcanoes, how they are formed, the temperature of the lava and just watching a video on volcanic eruptions. That sounds cool and kids love seeing volcanoes erupt. Well, my students enjoy creating erupting volcanoes so much more. They enjoy sculpting their mountain, mixing their solution for the lava, and watching the eruption and flow of the lava. During this exciting experiment, we still have to be safe. Students will need safety goggles to wear to protect their eyes. Also, they will wear the gloves to protect their skin and hands during the mixing of materials. While all great scientist make observations and conduct several tests, these students will do the same. Having and using clipboards during science will aid the students while recording data and making analysis wherever they are working, in the classroom or outside the classroom.

By donating to this project, you will not only help supply materials to a classroom.

Donating to my students will show them that as scientists we follow rules and care about our safety and doing things the right way. This project will teach the students about being responsible and that they are apart of the science world. Real Scientists working and experimenting to solve problems.
