Our science book does not cover all of the science standards for our state. Students are now taking standardized tests for science and we don't have all the materials they need to master these concepts.
When I say science, my students smile.
Our schedule is very tight and science is taught 2-3 times a week. I want to give them the chance to explore science on their own during reading centers. They will be able to read about a topic and complete an activity on their own. They want science daily!
Our school is a Title I school. The kids are very curious and excited to learn about science. They don't bring a lot of prior knowledge with them about science. Everything seems new to them. Their eyes light up and they grin when they know a science lesson is about to start. Many of them will tell you that the jobs they desire as adults are related to one scientific field or another. They think about science and they dream about their future.
My Project
I am requesting hands-on science kits that require students to read about a subject, explore science with a hands-on activity and then write about their findings. The thing that is so fabulous about this, is that I will be able to include science during our reading center time. They will be able to explore science in small groups while improving their reading and writing skills.
My students would be very thrilled to receive science center kits. These kits would be used during science and when they finished their work early. I would also like to include them as a comprehension activity for non-fiction reading during our reading rotations.
My students need hand-on science kits so they can go through the scientific process.
These kits will cover simple machines, matter, the solar system, the human body, and force and motion. These will be shared among our grade level and help 4 classes of students reach a deeper understanding.
