We have a beautiful new school that was built in an area hard hit by the current economic situation. Our school is a title one school with more than 50% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Our city has one of the largest foreclosure rates in the state and our school has a fairly transient population. Parents have long commutes to and from work and often students do not have the support to complete homework correctly. One third of my class is students for whom English is a second language. My class is full of sweet, energetic kids who get extremely excited when we play games that reinforce math or allows them to do fun activities such as writing their answers on individual white boards or writing answers on the board at the front of the room. They enjoy playing around the world to reinforce their multiplication facts.
