Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Ms. Higgs, can I use your laptop to type my laboratory report?"; "Ms. Higgs, can I use your iPad to go on Edheads?"; "Ms. Higgs, can we play a game on 24/7 Science?" I answer these questions from my students on a daily basis. They are self-motivated and ready to stretch their inquiry muscles.

My students are disproportionally children of color, impoverished, from single-parent and low-income households, underdeveloped in their English language mastery, and over-age for their grade.

My students face a multitude of socio-economic obstacles that would impede students' academic success. Nevertheless, they still come to school every day. Some of my students make long treks across the city's boroughs, traveling from homeless shelters to come to school. The students whom I teach are students with disabilities who are placed in self-contained special-education classes. My students require a lot of support in order to access the general-education curriculum. Despite the hard work and time they must invest to learn, they still make an effort every day. My fellow teachers and I often supply our students with basic school supplies. My students' parents struggle to supply them with the necessities. Therefore, access to computers at home is sadly uncommon.

My Project

With technology in the science classroom, I could differentiate instruction more easily. I would be able to deliver whole group instruction that would provide visual and auditory engagement. In addition, I would be able to send individual students or pairs of students to learning stations while I worked with smaller groups for more intensive small-group instruction. In my classroom, you would see children engaged in scientific inquiry at all levels. Some students would be able to do virtual science laboratories, while others were performing laboratories with teacher scaffolding. Technology in the classroom would give me the opportunity to better address my students' various disabilities; to create individual learning plans according to the students' IEPs; and to create a more personalized learning environment.

My students are often frustrated by the limited opportunities they have to use my computer and laptop.

They groan when my laptop takes forever to load; they complain when my iPad freezes; and they rush to help me when my projector loses its picture (due to its frayed connection). New technology would enhance the learning experience in my classroom and allow my students, who have overcome so many obstacles, to build on their educational successes and embolden them with renewed confidence.
