Have you ever been in a country where you are the only one that speaks English, and you cannot communicate with anyone? Well, I have 11 students in my 24 students class that speak English as a second language. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
I have 24 5 year olds who are so eager to learn.
In our class there are 7 different languages represented and 10 different countries. we have 14 boys and 10 girls and we are very active and curious about everything. Our school is located in Washington state and has grades K-5. We are a full day kindergarten class so we learn everything from reading, writing, science, math and social studies. We spend a lot of time asking good questions and learning new words to add to our vocabulary.
My Project
This video camera will change our lives! Especially those students who speak little or no English. We will be able to look at pictures of things to help describe words, we will be able to video tape each others' learning and talk about the process we went through, we will look at each others projects on camera to remind us of previous learning, we can take videos of science lessons we do outside and use them to further our knowledge for the next lesson, and we will be able to record some of our exciting celebrations that we will have because we will do so much learning this year!
This is important because there is already a significant achievement gap between students like mine and students with more resources.
Just because a student doesn't speak the language, does not mean they cannot learn. this camera will help me to make learning more alive for all my students, and help to give background and detail to my students who struggle with language.
