I teach 6th to 8th grade Science in an alternative program and our access to appropriate reading materials is limited to what we can supply for ourselves.
At present we have only 2 students, but that will change rapidly as students get in trouble in their home schools and are sent to us. One of our current students has enjoyed reading the Science sample magazine I have.
The Current Science and Health magazines from Weekly Reader will provide an interesting and informative opportunity for them to read during a time when this is required. Reading is an issue with our at risk children. The reading materials requested are interesting and include activities and pictures that generate an interest in reading and participating. Many of our students that struggle with normal classwork and working with others respond well to looking at a magazine and this generates interest which is not threatening in their social environment.
