Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love Science because great Science can come from anywhere or anyone. Einstein was a non-descript clerk who overnight became one of the greatest-regarded minds in history. My students are only in high school, yet they might well make great discoveries or do great things with the right push.

My students are all recent immigrants who have come to the United States to learn English and find opportunities that exist no where else in the world.

They are attempting to graduate high school in the same four years, sometimes three, that native speakers do, but with the added challenge of doing it all in a foreign language, English. Of this group, a few have taken the initiative to conduct independent research projects in Science. They have entered proposals and been accepted to compete in a city-wide competition of DNA Barcoding projects. They are studying everything from the DNA of Chinese medicinal plants and potentially endangered seahorses to weeds on the street and in our parks. I am sponsoring and advising these teams as they learn new Science, troubleshoot inevitable problems, and synthesize a polished final presentation. They are somehow finding time in their busy day to do all of this while still maintaining excellent achievement in all of their regular classes.

My Project

In May, after many months of collecting, extracting, and analyzing the DNA of their samples, my students will present their results at a city-wide Science Fair symposium sponsored by the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Labs. Of the projected 100 teams that will be there, at least 10 will be from our school. It still boggles my mind that our small school is contributing 10% of the total of all New York City schools to this competition! With the generosity of the ABC Family program in mind, I was inspired by my students to give them Science Club t-shirts to show off around school and at the symposium. Official "Science Challenge Club" t-shirts with our school name will really show off our shared spirit of scientific discovery and the students' commitment to their hard work.

In other team endeavors such as sports, academics, or other clubs that I have been part of in my school, such a simple thing as a team t-shirt really brings students together.

After all my students have been through to reach the United States and succeed here, they have a lot of days they remember - first arriving, hearing English for the first time, their first day of school. This day celebrating their accomplishments will stand out as a day to remember even more thanks to your generosity.
