Complicated science concepts that are entirely new to my students need to be presented with a wide range of methods. I work hard to incorporate several different learning modalities in every lesson: visual, logical, tactile. I know my students, particularly the ones who struggle with reading, need to encounter concepts more than once and in a variety of ways, including hands-on labs and guided readings. Discovery Channel School's Science Investigation Libraries give students yet another chance to understand a new concept or idea. Their Life Science and Physical Science Libraries are composed of 10-minute focused video segments on specific key concepts. With these libraries, a lesson on cells could begin with a ten-minute introductory video clip to help students visualize in 3D what their bodies are composed of. Or a lab on conservation of mass could end with a short ten-minute segment that helps students grasp the concept. With both my sixth grade life science students and my seventh grade physical science students, these videos will give me yet another way to explain complex ideas. PS 308 is a Title One school in Brooklyn, New York. I teach science to 240 6th and 7th grade students each week. For my students, my class is their first science class. I try to lay a foundation of understanding the world and universe around them as well as help them develop reasoning and thinking skills. I want them to reach high school prepared for more advanced science, as well as prepare them for a lifetime of being curious about the world around them. These videos would help me bring to life ideas and concepts too complicated to explain just once or in one way.
