Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At NEW Academy Canoga Park, a Charter School in Canoga Park, we are dedicated to providing the highest standards-based curriculum possible. We believe that making the academic curriculum as engaging as possible is the key to our students' success. The majority of our students are English-language learners, which means we are dedicated to helping make their acquisition of English easier by providing as many hands-on, visually rich, and reinforcing tasks as possible to support their learning. I teach fourth grade, and we study a lot of life sciences, earth sciences, and physical sciences. It would be wonderful to add some other resources to our science curriculum by obtaining an encyclopedia set and some science videos. These resources would help our students really understand the many elements of science. The videos would help our students visualize what they're learning about. Our science textbooks use a lot of vocabulary words and concepts that our students want to understand; however, due to the abundance of unfamiliar vocabulary words, they often require more visual aids to support their learning. The use of encyclopedias could greatly enhance our project-based informational reports that are created each trimester. For example, this last trimester, when we studied ecosystems, the students used books that I checked out from the library in order to do research. With the aid of encyclopedias, the students would be able to do research about so much more than the specific books that I was able to provide. The videos would also be a great tool to frontload information that students will be learning about. Frontloading is a valuable tool in teaching because it stimulates students to be motivated to learn about what they are seeing. For example, watching a video about seed dispersal via plants, insects, animals, and natural elements is fascinating. It is so much easier for students to read about seed dispersal after they have seen how it happens. Finally, these resources will last for many years to come. They can also be shared with other teachers who are learning about the various scientific topics.
