Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Jacob, Vikki, and Miriam are some of the most enthusiastic students I have ever met. They are highly inquisitive and love to ask questions! They are the inspiration behind this project!

Jacob, Vikki and Miriam became very excited on our annual canal clean-up in the fall. Not only did they (and the rest of the conservation club) beautify the park, they also got to do some water testing on the canal. They were very eager about using the scientific tools and told me while they were testing that they felt like "real scientists". They suggested how amazing it would be if they could tour the town and sample all the major waterways and then compare the results. A water sampling field trip is now in the process to celebrate World Water Day!

The students involved in this project will learn how to collaborate with one another and work as a team to collect water samples from around our town. Academically, they will learn how to analyze scientific data and communicate the results back to their classmates. They will make sure to identify trends or variations in their samples.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to celebrate World Water Day by planning a field trip in which we will visit water ways around our town and sample the water. We would like to compare our results and also report back to our classmates about what we discovered.

The materials for this project were chosen based on variables we wanted to take a closer look at: pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen levels. We also took into account the need for gloves and sample bottles in order to take some samples back with us. Each of us will also be divided up into teams which will focus on a specific variable. (In order to make the most of our time at each location.)

This project is important to us because we live in a large town and are curious to find out the quality of our water. In honor of World Water Day it is important for everyone to live in an area were the water quality is high, not only for humans, but for the sustainability of the environment as well.
