Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Please consider donating to my 6th grade Science classroom. I want to inspire my students to be inquisitive and think like scientists. My students learn best through hands-on experiences but I lack the materials to make this happen.
In each unit, we study a scientific phenomena.
Students explore the phenomena through experiments and try to explain their thinking through models. Many of the supplies I am asking for will be used for these experiments and models. For example, when we study thermal energy, students will create an exothermic chemical reaction between sodium hydroxide and aluminum. This creates Hydrogen gas which we will collect in balloons.
Another phenomena we explore is how light reacts with different materials to make a one-way mirror work. We use a box model, one way mirror film and flashlights to explore how a one-way mirror works. For this unit, we need batteries for the flashlights.
In another unit, we explore how vapor in the air condenses when it cools off. We set up a terrarium inside a 2 liter bottle. We heat up the water so it turns into vapor. We place ice on top of the bottle to represent the cold upper atmosphere and we watch the vapor condense in the cold air. For this activity, we need gallon size bags to hold the ice in place.
The rest of my supplies (tape, hot glue guns, etc..) will be used for students to make 2D and 3D models of the phenomena we study!
