My students need a class set of scissors, PTC testing strips, and an anatomy model of the human skin layers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching science is great! I love talking about the human body, how it works and how to keep it healthy. As I teach lessons, I find that there are little things here and there that I need that would be a great addition to my lessons, but financially, I am restricted with what I can get.
I teach seventh graders in a wonderful Los Angeles school.
My kids learn life science one semester and health science the second semester. I am a very hands-on teacher. I like to have my kids see anatomy models of the body systems we are discussing and be able to use art to reflect their science concepts.
My Project
The first resource I need is PTC testing strips. PTC, or phenylthiourea, is an organic compound that some people taste as very bitter, while for others it is virtually tasteless. This ability to taste or not taste is genetic. About 75% of the population is a non-taster, as it is a dominant trait.
During our genetics lessons I like for students to use a test strip to find out if they are a taster or non-taster. Kids like discovering which phenotype they have.
I also would like an anatomy model to enhance my integumentary system lesson, so that students may get a better look at what the different layers of skin consist of.
If you will help me fund these items, it will be an enhancement to my students' learning and by funding this proposal you will be satisfying some of their curiosity.
