Science Students Need An Apple a Day

My students need an iPad and protective case to interact with modern science apps, record and edit videos for presentations, and explore science on the internet.

My Students

My 7th graders are surrounded by cell phones, video game systems, and all forms of digital media. They are immersed in technology...until they arrive at school! My students need technology integrated into their science class on a regular basis.

I teach 7 classes of 7th grade science for a total of 242 students.

My students are quite a diverse group, representing a variety of socio-economic levels, academic ability levels, nationalities, and more. Over a third of my students fluently speak a language other than English, and there are 14 different languages represented within my classes. I teach many English Language Learners and special ed students who learn best with visual aids, as well as two classes of Accelerated Science students who enjoy challenges. My colleagues and I have developed a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum. We use a variety of hands-on activities and instructional strategies to both motivate and teach students. What we are missing is the technology component of STEM, as well as the money needed to acquire it.

My Project

The iPad is a powerful learning tool! It opens up new ways of instruction and innovative teaching methods. It accommodates all learning styles, is easy to use, and highly engaging. Students can learn independently, in groups, or by watching a demonstration of an app on the projector. At my school, the science department has several first generation ipads. Unfortunately, they are outdated, slow, can't take photos or video, and can't accept many new apps. My dream is to have a class set of modern iPads so that every student in my room can be interacting with an iPad while navigating the internet, creating presentations, learning to code, or exploring science apps. This iPad will be the first step towards making this dream a reality. Students will be able to record videos to show their understanding of science concepts and will be able to interact with some of the latest apps developed for science education.

Providing students with a modern iPad will help them prepare for success in high school, college, and 21st century careers.

These supplies will allow students to be engaged in science class and make a connection with their studies that would not be possible if they were limited to textbooks. Being able to use modern technology will help students be prepared to pursue higher education and succeed in modern jobs.
