Science Stars! Reach for the Moon and Reach the Stars!
My students need science materials that are high interest/low reading level. I felt it was more economically doable if I bought one workbook (new purchase price $81) and then scan and make copies for my class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a delight. Each student has a specific degree of hearing loss ranging from total deafness to hard of hearing. My students communicate using American Sign Language and other than that, are just like any other middle schooler. When my students enter our classroom it is most often the only place where they have other people they can fully communicate with. For a majority of my students, they go home to a place where their family does not learn Sign Language. This results in isolation and language deprivation. Although my students are motivated and extremely bright, there is often a disconnect in what they know and what they can express which impacts their access to the curriculum and therefore their academic success. Their texts are written for their specific grade level and most of my students are reading at the kindergarten or first-grade level. What I love about my students is they want to learn...they are curious...they are proud of their achievements. They are special because they blossom when presented with grade level curriculum at their reading and language.
My Project
In our class, I teach all academic subjects. I asked my students, who just happen to be Deaf, which subject they would most like to be a focus of this project. They whole-heartedly chose science. We use the State recommended and district supplied textbook but the students are unable to read the book independently. I supplement the district textbook with the Longman Science textbook. The text covers the same curriculum but is written at a more appropriate reading and language level. The science workbooks will be used to reinforce the language and concepts that have been presented. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create and Deaf students depend on. My classroom is a place that my students really enjoy. Every Science, History, and Math project is enhanced with manipulatives and hands-on experiences meant to encourage independent reading and writing. The science workbooks, science books and hand-on science projects have been chosen with my students in mind. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these science materials will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading and help enrich their experiences with the printed word that will give them the skills to be successful in all academic areas.
