Science is engaging, fun, and encourages curiosity that can shape the world. Sometimes in schools we get so focused on subjects that are regularly tested, like ELA and math, that we forget to put those same efforts into science.
No one is arguing that math, reading, and writing are not important, but science shouldn't be degraded in terms of value and effort.
I want my students to be inspired. To ooh and aah at rays of light shining through a glass prism when we learn about the electromagnetic spectrum. I want them to excitedly read informational texts about scientific principals, animals, flowers, and more because the books look interesting and catch their attention with beautiful illustrations. I want to be able to show them real hands-on solar and wind power, instead of just watching videos about it. I want them to be engineers and figure out how to build the tallest towers without the blocks tumbling. I also want to create fun standard-based science activities and experiments that can last throughout the years by laminating them and stapling in class. For example, I would love to laminate pictures of Native Hawaiian birds with different beak types to use while teaching about adaptations!
I want my students to be in love with science by using these materials to create hands-on, exciting lessons.
