The idea Science Scavenger Hunt came to me in a workshop I took over the summer. GPS units are an up and coming commodity in the education system. Not only do vehicles now have GPS systems, but even cell phone companies are starting to use them. I teach Physical Science to mostly freshmen at a very diverse high school in a rural area. The majority of my students LOVE to hunt, fish, and camp. By involving their learning with GPS units it would allow students to measure current speed, average speed, time of sunrise/sunset, respectable maximum speed, trip timer, and trip distance. They also cover vectors and direction. By introducing GPS units into science, students would light up with enthusiasm and motivation knowing how they could use science in the "real world". I will include many activities (labs) involving GPS units and will build up to a mid-term or final lab. This final lab will be a "Science Scavenger Hunt" where students will have to answer science questions, find the waypoints with the answer, and locate the next clue using GPS units. By using GPS units, my students will benefit by understanding the material, not just memorizing notes. They will also have a solid foundation in science that will absolutely benefit them for the rest of their high school careers, as well as into college or trade school.
