Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am trying to up the ante at my school with the science curriculum--more hands-on lessons to engage students and help them become more successful in today's scientific community. Our students are not given opportunities at home to explore and expand their science knowledge, so I will help in class.

My students are active learners and have a thirst for science.

Since I have become the science teacher for the school I have noticed a huge interest jump in science. They have so many questions and I try to give them the best that I can. I teach at a very high poverty school; we have a lot of homeless children and migrant families. The only stability a lot of these students have comes at school. Though these students come from poor lives they are extremely bright and willing to learn. They love to learn new things about the world and enjoy all aspects of science. I am truly inspired by these students and thrilled to work at this school. They have great dreams for the future and I will help them the best way I know how.

My Project

I teach every student in our school. They come into my room - we call it 'the lab.' I refer to the students as 'scientists.' I would use the requested materials to start a weather center for the 2nd and 5th graders. I will use the environmental card with 3rd-5th graders when we discuss recycling and how natural and human disasters can destroy environments. I will use the sorting sieves to help the K-3 graders sort soils and rocks. We can use the simple machines kit while talking about Newton's Laws of Motion and simple machine unit. They need to see real life examples of each machine as it works and how to work them.

I teach over 700 students; every student in the school will eventually thrive from these materials because they will use them throughout their K-5 career at our school.

I have put so much into our science lab and need help supplying these materials to my students. Thank you for thinking about us.
