My Students

Crucial to science education is hands-on involvement: showing, not just telling; real experiments and field trips and not just 'virtual reality.'-Martin Rees, British cosmologist and astrophysicist. Performing experiments is vital to my students' learning.

We are a middle school in an large urban environment.

Many of my students are English-Language Learners. I also have a high percentage of Special Education students and students performing below grade level. Hands-on activities keep them engaged and help them stay focused in the classroom. My students get excited when it's a "lab" day. They become actively involved in the scientific process, including making mistakes and learning from them. They learn more when they can try out concepts for themselves, instead of just reading about them or watching a demonstration. Recently, our school was co-located with another school. That school now has the science lab. I am trying to re-build a lab in a room that has not been a lab for over 10 years. We opened this year discussing lab safety procedures and the importance of lab safety. Yet, I don't have a completely safe way to sanitize the goggles we will be frequently using, especially in 8th grade science.

My Project

I am requesting a goggle sanitizer for our laboratory. Wipes are good for cleaning the lenses, but do little in the way of actually killing bacteria and germs, and they do not sterilize the rubber bands that touch the students' heads. I teach over one hundred students, and we are going to be sharing the same goggles in back to back classes. Some students do not want to wear goggles that have been used by another person without being cleaned. I don't blame them. However, the goggles are necessary for lab safety. This ultraviolet light goggle sanitizer will allow me to sterilize their goggles in fifteen minutes.

Donations to this project will greatly improve my classroom environment.

Students enjoy labs and want to feel safe while performing experiments. They will feel like they are in a "real" science lab, practicing real safety procedures. I will feel better knowing the goggles are sanitized. This project will benefit my current students and future students of our school. Thank you for your help!
