My Students

We are a suburban school district that serves about 550 students from mostly working and middle class backgrounds. Many of our students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. Being at school allows them to focus on something other than what is going on at home, and for many of our students, school is a safe, predictable environment that they thrive in.

With so many things in the lives of my students that are out of their control, school feels like the one place where they can be comfortably themselves.

I want to ensure that all of my students are equipped with the tools they need to be successful in my classroom, and having access to high-quality materials will help my students succeed.

My Project

My students need science materials to help enhance their scientific learning. I am teaching a math/science split class and while I have plenty of math manipulatives at my disposal, it's science materials that I'm needing. My students would benefit from materials like a electric circuit kit to enable them to see how electricity powers lights, and a starter kit of rocks to help them see the difference between metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks. We also need lab tools like thermometers and pipettes so they can accurately measure, whether in Fahrenheit or milliliters. Dry erase boards will also help them visualize strategies and make hypothesis as we experiment.

I believe in the science education strategy of ABC--activity before content.

Students learn best when they get to see and do in addition to watching and listening. When students can explore a concept, they gain important background knowledge that they can refer back to when they go on to learn the reasons behind the why. It is important for students to get as many hands-on experiences in science as they can to enhance their understanding and with these materials, I will be able to nurture a love for science in my students.
