Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in a low income school. Almost 70% of our first graders are second language learners. I work with the most wonderful first grade team, and we love to offer experiences to all of the first graders. Due to budget cuts our supplies are limited. It breaks my heart that students are learning science from workbooks and not from hands-on experiences. I remember when my teacher said "science time" I got excited. Now I don't see that look of excitement. I see instead a glazed look of not another workbook. I believe if the students are engaged, there is more learning. That is why I am requesting four live frog habitats as well as four shape and color discovery sets. Not only will these tie in with our math and reading units, but it will make science a more exciting time. With your support the 80 first grade students and their teachers will once again feel the excitement when it is science time! Who knows? The next famous scientist might be sitting in my room right now waiting for the spark to ignite his/her science career.
