Sixth grade students are very curious about the world and greatly benefit from hands-on activities. Our student population is a diverse group which includes minority students, economically disadvantaged and students with special needs. Their science curriculum includes the three branches of science: life, earth, and physical. At least 20% of our class time involves hands-on activities. We are seeing an increase in the sixth grade population of children with special needs. The students greatly benefit from the use of manipulatives.

Economically, the student population is disadvantaged. To break the poverty cycle students need to be inspired by the possibilities an education can provide. Providing supplies for each child places all of them on the same playing field. The sixth grade class seems to have the fewest supplies of all our students.

Our state frameworks for the sixth grade has numerous standards that are related to convection currents in the Earth's mantle. Students are expected to identify and model the layers of the Earth. They are also required to model how convection currents affect the lithosphere's movement, the causes of volcanic activity, and how this relates to the Earth's changing surface.

Living in the delta of Arkansas we have limited resources available to our classrooms. I know our department has always used what we order and we share kits and material between grade levels for reinforcement of certain science topics. The sixth and eighth grades have very similar frameworks. The eighth grade builds on what has been taught in the sixth grade in Earth & space science.
