Science Readers

My students need Science World magazines to have scientific reading material for any down time they may have in class.

My Students

I believe that everyone loves to read, just as soon as they find the right book. My students don't always have the opportunities to read on a regular basis, so that "right book" may seem really far away, but science readers can help them quickly become avid readers.

My students mainly come from lower income communities in a southern city.

Some days they fight me tooth and nail, and other days they're all ears and drinking in all the science information they can get. Many of my students aren't at their grade level in reading, and even though I'm a science teacher I believe it is still my responsibility to help them become fluent readers. My kids may be in high school, but their reading levels range from 2nd grade to college level. There are a variety of factors that could affect such low reading scores, but regardless of why some of my kids can't read, I need to do everything in my power to increase their reading levels before they graduate from high school.

My Project

Each of my four Biology and two Physical Science classes progress at different rates through their lessons, and often there is down time when students don't have assignments to complete or finish early. Having science readers on their tables for them to pick up and read during any down time will maximize the time they are learning in school and help them increase their scientific literacy and overall literacy skills. I'm hoping the initiation of these Science World magazines will spur a school-wide effort to get kids reading during every spare second that they have!

If you as an employer have the choice between a potential employee who can read and one who can't, you're most likely going to go with the one who can.

Give my kids the chance to be that job candidate. Some of them need a lot of reading help right now, and these magazines are a fun and encouraging way to keep them reading and learning. High school doesn't have reading classes, so it's up to me to hone those skills in my kids. Read on!
