This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range from 13 to 20 years of age. They are boys and girls who speak a variety of first languages. They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. Twenty-one point seven percent are English learners. 100 percent are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced-price lunch.
One of the issues faced by my students is lack of supplies for Science project or access to printers at home.
Students learn better using visuals. Students whose first language is English have mixed abilities. Due to budget cuts, the school does not supply materials like colored paper and writing utensils. Some students cannot afford a constant supply of required supplies. In addition, a number of students do not live in one place because the parents are either separated or the students live in a foster home. This affects their stability and consistent structure and therefore the students often come to school unprepared.
My Project
My students require pencils to write with and colored markers/pencils for science project. Students need to print resources for the projects too. Since most students do not have access to printers at home, I would like them to be able to print their work in class. We have colored paper and construction paper, thanks to our previous donors through Donorschoose.org . These material enable most students, who are visual learners to demonstrate their knowledge through visuals.
Science is abstract.
Models make it feel real. Often it’s a challenge for my students to conceptualize some scientific concepts because Science study involves very small/large or dangerous objects. In order to help my students visualize these objects they need glue and markers to build models.
