My Students
I work at a 6th through 8th grade middle school with about 700 students. We have just qualified as a Title 1 school for the 2018-2019 school year. We are located in Wasilla, Alaska, the heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, about 45 minutes outside of Anchorage, AK.
Our students have limited ability to participate in national educational or competitive events due to the prohibitive cost of travel from Alaska.
Although we are isolated geographically from the rest of the United States, we strive to prepare our students for a future as citizens of our great nation and the global world.
My Project
Our Science Olympiad team has been named the 2018 Alaska State Champions at the middle school level. Funds raised through this project will help pay travel expenses for our team to attend the national level competition of Science Olympiad at Ft. Collins, CO.
These funds will help young Alaskan science students connect with their peers from the lower 48 through the National Science Olympiad competition.
By meeting, competing, and connecting with other science-savvy students from across the nation, our students will experience a broader world. They will visit Colorado State University to compete in a high-level science competition with their peers from throughout the US and Puerto Rico. This trip will expand their first-hand knowledge of beyond the isolated possibilities in Alaska. They will experience geography, science, and social settings that are not easily accessible to their home state.
