Help me give my students fun, engaging learning with science of reading based white boards, magnetic answer boards, activities and games!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Stright's classroom raised $663

My Project
Only 30% of Philadelphia public school students are reading on-grade level. My goal is to ensure every student in my classroom is reading to the best of their ability, ready for 2nd grade, and gaining critical, life-long literacy skills.
First grade is an essential year for building literacy skills that will last them a lifetime.
I do not take this job lightly and do as much research and professional development as possible to ensure my students are getting the highest quality reading instruction that they can. The Science of Reading is a brain-based approach to learning to read. The use of manipulatives, games, and different senses deepens learning in a way that is enjoyable and memorable to students. These resources will help my students make the connections needed to become fluent, life long readers.
Instead of standard whiteboards, these Elkonin box boards are specifically designed for students to write each sound they hear, breaking up words into individual phonemes. For example, the word “shake” only has 3 sounds, but 5 letters! Each sound gets written in a box so sounds know that “sh” makes the /sh/ sound and that sneaky e is quiet! The hand mirrors allow students to see themselves to properly mimic mouth placement of the different sounds. The floor boxes and clipboards will allow students to take their learning activities and games out of a chair and desk, incorporating more movement and get those wiggles out. This will all be a game-changer for students with ADHD or reading-based learning disabilities as it allows for increased movement and multi-sensory learning.
Not only can these resources be used this year, but can continue in use for the rest of my teaching career of hundreds more students to come through my classroom.
