My Project
For the past few years, our students have been coming to 4th grade lacking the phonemic awareness needed to conquer the 4th grade curriculum. We are requesting Phoneme/Grapheme Instructional Cards, both a Teacher Set and Mini Cards, and a Sound Wall Instructional Guide. These items will be used as a visual to support whole group Foundational Skills, and used during small group instruction as an intervention for struggling students. We are also requesting funds for a Morpheme Magic Set. Ideally, this resource would be used in whole group. However, for the time being we would use this resource with our higher-level students to develop deep word knowledge by teaching suffixes, prefixes, roots, and Greek combining forms. We are also requesting a Phonics Poster Set to hang in the classroom as reference during lessons about Consonant Blends, Digraph & Unusual Consonants, 6 Syllable Types, and Syllable Division Rules.
Our hopes are that we can fill in the missing gaps that our students have and help achieve our District “moonshot” of all students reading on grade level by 2030.
The project supports the latest research of using the Science of Reading as best practices. With these building blocks, students will gain more confidence in themselves to tackle more complex texts in all content areas.
This project will address the needs of all students, meeting students above grade level, on grade level, and below grade level, as well as meeting the needs of students receiving IEP services and our English Language Learners.
