My students need basic school supplies so that we can remain organized throughout the year. I also need to refill my table boxes with colored pencils, erasers, and markers so that students can complete creative projects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located underneath a freeway overpass - well, the parking lot is at least. My school is squished into a tiny lot near downtown LA. Our school doesn't have space for a field, or a playground, or even really much room for lunch and nutrition breaks. .
As cramped and under-equipped as it feels to me, I know that our school is a refuge for many of my students.
They face struggles that would distract anyone from school - growing up in a low-income household, learning English as a second language, fearing for their family members who are undocumented.
But despite the hardships they face outside of school, they always make the most of each day. Many students come to tutoring with me after school, or hang out and help me clean up during lunch. They celebrate when their team wins an Engineering Design Challenge, and they push each other to do better. They inspire me every day with the positivity and determination that they bring to school.
My Project
My students need notebooks so that we can compile our notes in one organized place. They also need basic classroom supplies, so that throughout the year we can create thoughtful, neat, and organized work.
Interactive notebooks are one of the most important tools in science class.
They teach students how to make connections between old and new material, and give them space to write predictions, observations, and their own conclusions. I am excited to try out this new strategy with my incoming class.
Additionally, my classroom needs to be restocked of all the usual goodies students need - a new pencil sharpener, erasers, tape, pens, etc. I don't need to tell you how important these basics are...we've all been in a classroom at one point! This way my students can start the year ready to work.
