My students need high interest, age-appropriate science reading material to help strengthen their non-fiction reading skills and bring current science news to our classroom.
Our students are bright, eager kids, from a wide variety of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. What they may lack in cultural experience is made up for with tenacity and inner strength of character that make each of them unique. They have goals and dreams for their futures and the perseverance needed to make those dreams into realities. Growing up in our small, rural community, most of them know more about farming, hunting, and making the most of what they have than their city cousins. Many of them also know more about living in rural poverty than most.
My Project
Today, most people get their news from the radio or cell phones. Reading non-fiction science information is something most of us rarely get around to in our fast-paced digital media information world.
Putting a Scholastic quality, high-interest, and age-appropriate science news magazine in our students' hands is vital to our science program.
We need thirty subscriptions to SuperScience Scholastic magazines for our classroom.
Textbooks are 3+ years behind when they are ordered NEW and relying on computers and the internet for needed materials has it's own set of unique challenges. Quality, timely reading material like scholastic is known for is our best option. Our school has a wonderful community spirit and once we have read our magazines, we will pass them to another grade level so they may continue to enrich our students.
