My Students

The students that I serve are creative, genuinely curious about science, and have a deep dedication to having fun while learning.

Our middle school students' determination to flourish as they navigate & persevere through the economic, social and emotional struggles as they come of age in the city of Chicago, is unmatched.

As an educator, I admire our adolescents' tenacity to develop as empathetic, well rounded, academically minded individuals. The students I serve are acutely aware that success and lasting change comes from empathy, collaboration, and hard work in academics - they understand that complacency only fuels the hardship that their community faces.

Our school is located in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood. This beautiful west side community is one that grapples with layers of social ills; poverty, gang violence, and easy access to drugs are often part of the daily environment for my students - more than 90 percent of my students come from low-income households. The pressures to participate in what surrounds them are almost unavoidable. Despite the latter, my students and their families continue to pursue a better future for themselves and their community.

My Project

The Science World magazines will be used in a multitude of ways in the science classroom; from reinforcing informational text reading strategies to covering current events related to the curriculum, Science World magazines always captivate my middle school students attention and imagination.

Science world magazines are a great way to softly introduce the most current discoveries, research, and issues in science in a captivating way.

These monthly science magazines showcase a broad variety of topics in science. They are tremendously informative and entertaining. My students love the info-graphics, illustrations, and images that the publisher provides. Besides the latter, taking a day out of the week to read about current events related to science provides my students with a break or current event connection to regular instruction and curriculum.
