Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a busy, hands-on, investigative classroom for 5th grade. I have two groups of about 30 5th graders that I see for a half day each in math and science. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

My students like to engage in hands-on activities in math and science through small group and collaborative learning centers.

Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By approaching each day in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire all students to pursue their strengths in the fields of STEM.

My Project

My students need up to date Scholastic Science Magazine subscriptions. Students will engage in reading these nonfiction magazines on a regular basis. They will practice nonfiction reading strategies as they read articles. They will learn many interesting new concepts about the world around them, all while practicing and improving their reading skills!

This resource will help enrich the education of all of the fifth grade students in our classroom.

It will expose students to new, exciting, and engaging reading material on a regular basis. Students will have the opportunity to take these materials home to share their excitement and curiosity with their families. This will help bridge the gap between school and home learning.
