Science Made Simple

My students need access to science software that is engaging and teaches a lot in a little bit of time. The iPad will allow them to use it in small groups as well.

My Students

In my Kindergarten classroom our day is really packed with most of our day being devoted to reading, writing, and math. While I agree these are important, I also feel that science and sometimes social studies gets the short end of the stick.

My class is made up of a diverse group of boys and girls who come from different backgrounds and families.

But they have so much in common when it comes to excitement for learning. For some of them school is their first exposure to science. Seeing for the first time a caterpillar emerging into a butterfly, or watching a tiny brown seed explode into a plant with roots. It amazes me as their teacher how excited they can become over many things we as adults take for granted.

My Project

I want my class to have hands on exposure as much as possible. However due to restricted time and budgets I can't always deliver that. So I want to give them the next best thing which is to experience it through age appropriate software provided by science games from Lakeshore Learning. I hope to use this software to expose them to plants and animals and the life cycles and changes that happen. To be able to show them the difference in seasons and weather and how in other places there are so many different changes that can happen throughout the course of a year. To see how plants and animals adapt to those changes and are able to survive despite the conditions.

We have about 20 minutes each afternoon before dismissal to expose the children to as much science and social studies as we can.

I hope to incorporate this software into my lessons so the children can soak up as much knowledge as possible. I feel by adding this to hands on activities the children will really gain a deep knowledge of basic scientific concepts that will carry them through to higher learning.
