This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into class every morning excited about what we are going to be learning that day! It makes me so happy to hear, "I can't wait to see what we're doing in Science!" or to have a group of students begging to tell me about the book they're reading and wanting advice on how to get more books on a similar topic. I love listening to my students talk when they don't think I'm listening and instead of discussing movies or what they did over the weekend, they are making book suggestions or talking about our most recent social studies or science project. These moments remind me constantly how smart and eager to learn my students are!

The majority of my students are from low income families and although their families are extremely hard working and loving, my students face many challenges on a daily basis.

Many of my students are behind academically and because of their income levels do not always have the same access to educational materials and technology at home. Our school does it's best to meet the needs of our students. However, the school is overcrowded and resources are limited.

My Project

I am requesting hands-on science materials to help make science more interesting and meaningful to my students. I love planning exciting and engaging activities and hope that by doing so many of my students will go on to have careers in science. I want my students to know how exciting science is and how much it directly relates to our lives.

Most of my students do not get the chance to visit museums or go on field trips, so I'd like to bring the same experiences to them inside our classroom.

My students will use the materials requested to explore the properties of rocks and minerals. They will get to examine a fossil first hand instead of just reading about them in a book. We will use the materials to investigate magnetic force and to create our own science experiments.

I received a note from a student today that told me how much she loved science and couldn't wait to learn more. I would like to use these materials to continue encouraging my students to ask questions and be curious about their world.
