My Project

Science is like magic, but real!

I love teaching Science using activities and demos that are fun and engaging!

One demonstration that I do is the flame test. I hold different elements or compounds over a bunsen burner to show that different elements have different properties, including the color that they burn. Students can see how Copper Sulfate burns a green, Northern Lights color, and how Lithium creates hot pink flames. We talk about how fireworks use these different elements to make their colors. The students always love this demonstration because the flames look like something from a Harry Potter movie. It's like magic!

I'm also requesting Shrinky Dinks. We use these when we talk about thermal energy. The students love seeing how they shrink to 1/4 of their size in a few minutes. They are also great for drawing diagrams to show what they know: cell models, food webs, atomic models, etc. are more fun to draw on Shrinky Dinks than on a worksheet. The students can then watch it bake and keep it forever. Some make keychains, necklaces, or earrings. Others just keep them in their chromebook cases. Shrinky Dinks are an "old school" activity from when I was a kid in the 80's, and most of my students have never heard of them. Once they make one, they beg to make more.
