This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The state of Arizona has just adopted new Science Standards based on the Next Generation Science Standards. These are better aligned with today's technological and computer based society. The goal is to prepare our students for the fast-paced world they will soon enter into.
Our district is unable to provide the necessary materials to teach these new scientific and engineering building blocks to our elementary students.
Due to recent budget changes, it will take years for teachers to acquire all of the materials they need to successfully teach. This grant would provide my students will science kits and books that teach our prescribed learning objectives.
The children will be so excited to learn about force and motion, organisms and energy, and earth in the solar system. One of the science kits will teach students all about the solar system and how the planets orbit the sun. They will get to read amazing books, see real-life pictures, and use models to demonstrate these movements. The materials will bring the solar system to life for my students!
