This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be my 9th year at the same Title I middle school, and I can't see myself anywhere else, because of the students. Our school's population is highly diverse, and many faces the challenges that come with poverty - roughly 90% are students from a minority group and 90% receive free/reduced-price lunch. Our school is a big part of the community, where families take great pride in the successes of their children, our students.
They are students who deserve the chance to explore and engage in authentic learning experiences.
These kids take on academic challenges on top of any other struggles they may be facing. They have curiosity waiting to be unlocked, and enthusiasm waiting to be directed to a phenomenon that speaks to them. I am lucky to work with them!
My Project
There is so much that students can learn from a local environment, especially one as unique as the Great Salt Lake. The first step in any in effort, however, is to have the basic supplies to record learning. The mechanical pencils, lead, and colored pencils will allow students to write down and draw their observations while out in the field.
The bulk of these supplies will help students dive into the details of the Great Salt Lake ecology.
With gloves and water bottles, students will be prepared to stay warm and hydrated on field trips. The brine shrimp will allow students to perform extension investigations about the amazing adaptions these creatures have to be able to survive in such a harsh environment. With the plastic bottles, we will take sediment and water samples from different areas of the lake to create Wynogradsky columns. The binoculars will help students view waterfowl from a respectful distance, and the egg biorama will set the stage for interest in this important migratory wetland habitat by piquing curiosity in the classroom before we even step foot on the bus.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
