My inspiring 5th graders need to be connected with real life science activities and experiments. I teach 5th grade math and science in a high poverty urban school in Maryland.
The desire is there; my students are very interested in learning about science. We have an excellent near-by natural resource in the Chesapeake Bay, but I need classroom activities and resources to get my students hooked on science.
The resources I have selected will greatly enhance the lessons that focus on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. One of the resources is a tabletop erosion simulation. Students will actually be able to set up, perform, and observe a real experiment in the classroom. Then, they will be able to compare the experiment to real life situations on an upcoming field trip to the Chesapeake Bay. I want all of my students to have a deep understanding of the watershed before the trip, so that they can take full advantage of all that the trip has to offer. I have also included a cell poster, and a cell curriculum in my proposal. It can be tough to make the study of cells interesting. These resources will help to bring the information alive. It will also allow for more in classroom experiments which are hugely important to keep students interested in science. All of these resources will turn my classroom into a science lab. That alone will keep my kids in tune, and put them on the right track for high achievement in science.
You can make it happen. You can connect my students with the materials that will build on the excitement that they have for science. My school boasts students that are 90 percent high poverty, 90 percent minority, and 88 percent proficient on state tests. Your donation can help make the last number climb. Believe in our kids. Believe in our public schools.
