My Project

With these items, students can learn science while being active! Research has shown that physical activity can modulate mental states (such as focus and mood), which will help set up all students for success.

The various PE equipment will be used to teach about evolution/natural selection.

For example, some students may have to use tongs to pick up their “food”, while others may need to use chopsticks, and others may need to use oven mitts. We will do these simulations over several days, increasing the number of factors (complexity) each time. We may start off with one common food source to demonstrate the idea of fitness and natural selection. Later, we may introduce varied food sources (ex. Bean bags, wiffle balls, etc.) to demonstrate the concepts of adaptive radiation and ecological niches. In order to discuss evolution, there can be some sort of heritability of traits; students that get enough “food” to “survive” can pass along (literally) their adaptation.
